Dr. De Witt Clinton Morgan died yesterday at his home, Poplar Grove, on Bloomingdale avenue. He was sixty-four years old.
His fatal illness began with an attack of angina pectoris August 13, but later he seemed to improve. Then symptoms indicating heart failure appeared and resulted in his death.
In Rockingham county, Va., Dr. Morgan was born. His father was Rev. Gerard Morgan. He was the youngest of seven brothers, the eldest of whom is Rev. Dr. Lyttleton F. Morgan, of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After a course of study at Dickinson College he received the degrees of A.B. and A.M. Later he studied medicine at the University of Maryland and received the degree of M.D. but he practiced his profession only a short time.
Soon after his marriage he engaged in the lumber business, in which he continued until a few years ago, when he retired. He was for a time principal of a private school on Light street.
Dr. Morgan was an official member of Mt. Vernon Place Methodist Episcopal Church. He had decided literary and intellectual tastes.
A widow and three children survive him. His widow was Miss Sarah Hurst, eldest daughter of the late John Hurst, founder of the firm of Hurst, Purnell & Co. Mrs. Morgan is a sister of Mrs. Lyttleton B. Purnell and a cousin of Mr. John E. Hurst. The children of Dr. Morgan are John H., a Baltimore lawyer, D. Clinton, Jr., a member of the firm of Turner, Morgan & Co., and Philip Sydney Morgan.
Dr. Morgan wrote a letter about a year ago giving directions for his funeral. This letter stated that the funeral should be very plain and named Rev. Dr. L. B. Wilson and Rev. John Dashiell as the officiating clergymen. It also named eight pall-bearers, who were selected from Dr. Morgan’s pupils in past years.
