Notes: Born near Glasgow, Scotland, 1791. Educated at the private school of Dr. Allan Burns; Demonstrator of Anatomy, Andersonian Institution, Glasgow, 1810; Professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Surgery, Andersonian Institution, 1812; emigrated to Philadelphia, 1818, and opened an anatomical school there; Professor of Surgery, University of Maryland, 1820-26; Dean, University of Maryland, 1821-22; fought a duel in 1823 with General Cadwallader, of Philadelphia, Pattison escaping injury, whilst Cadwallader received a wound permanently disabling his right arm; went to Lendon, 1826; Professor of Anatomy, University of London, 1827-31; dismissed from the University of London, 1831; returned to Philadelphia, 1832; Professor of Anatomy, Jefferson Medical College, 1832-41; Founder of the Medical Department of the University of New York, 1841, and Professor of Anatomy there, 1841-51; author of “The Register and Library of Medical and Chirurgical Science;” “Surgical Anatomy of the Arteries of the Head and Neck” (Burns), two editions; “Anatomical Atlas” (Masse); “Anatomy” (Cruveilhier); an Editor of the American Medical Recorder; received Honorary M.D. late in life. “A small, elderly gentleman, of medium stature, with black eyes and white hair” (Gross). Died at New York, November 12, 1851.

Figge joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine as assistant in anatomy in 1929, became professor of anatomy in 1950 and was named chairman of the department in 1955. He passed away in 1973 at the age of 69. Dr. Figge presented the following paper before the Cordell Historical Society of the University of Maryland on April 20, 1938. The paper was published in the Bulletin magazine, Volume 23, No. 2 (October 1938).”
