Notes: Dr. Lewis M. Allen Dies in Virginia

Winchester, Va., May 2 (AP) — Dr. Lewis M. Allen, an obstetrician whose most celebrated case wasn’t recognized as such for more than 40 years, died at a hospital here today. Dr. Allen attended Mrs. Alice Warfield at her confinement in Monterey, Pa., in 1896. The baby girl became the Duchess of Windsor.

The 76-year-old specialist, a bank president and horse-breeder as well, succumbed after a long illness.

    Taught at U. of M.
After his graudation from the University of Maryland’s Medical School, he did graduate work abroad at Heidelberg and at Vienna. On his return to the United States he turned to the practice of obstetrics and taught his specialy at the University of Maryland.

While there he was called to Monterey, Pa., and on June 19, 1896, delivered the baby girl for whom King Edward VIII of England abdicated in 1936.

During the romance between the King and the twice-divorced American woman, Dr. Allen repeatedly declined interviews bearing on his role as the Duchess’ first physician.

Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Gilpin, of Baltimore; three sons, Howard Owen Allen, of Washington; Lewis M. Allen, Jr. of New York, and Douglas Brooke Allen of Rehoboth, Del.; a brother, Richard Holmes Allen, of Richmond, Va., and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Latrobe and Mrs. Hugh McCormick, both of Charles Town, W.Va.
