    Notes: On Monday, 15th, two old Confederate soldiers at the ConferenceHome at Pikesville, Dr. William J. Barry and Mr. John Steele,were found dead in their beds, both deaths being caused by heartdisease. They had both served in the war with Mexico. Dr. Barrywas a native of Baltimore where he practiced before and afterthe war as a physician. He served in the Mexican War as a surgeonof the Eleventh United States Regular Infantry and marched from Vera Cruz to the city of Mexico under General Scott. Dr. J. Pembroke Thom. of Baltimore, was a lieutenant in the regiment with him. As assistant and then full surgeon in the Dr. Barry saw four years of arduous service. He first served as contract surgeon in Byrd Island Hospital at Richmond, Virginia. As assistant surgeon in the Army, he was first surgeon assigned to Col. Benning’s Georgia regiment, Toombs’ brigade, and after five or six weeks was transferred to the heavy artillery battery at Cockpit Point on the Potomac, under Colonel Frobel, of Major-General Whiting’s Division. After that he was transferred to the Fourth Alabama Infantry, March, 1862, until the Battle of Malvern Hill, and was then transferred to Captain James Riley’s battery Hoods Division. He served with this battery during the first Maryland campaign and in the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was in the expedition to Tar River, after which he was assigned to hospital duty in Richmond, at the Howard Grove Hospital, and was transferred thence to camp Lee, Richmond, where he served on the Board of Surgeons Examining Conscripts. He was afterward at Bristol, Tenn., Jackson, Tenn., and Columbus, Mis., and was paroled on May 16, 1865.Mr. Steele was a private in Company A, 1st Maryland Infantry, and also in Company D, 1st Maryland Cavalry. Their remains were interred at the Confederate lot at Loudon Park Cemetery.
