Illness of Mr. Jefferson
We learn with regret that a serious affection of the eye has compelled Mr. JOSEPH JEFFERSON to desist from acting in Philadelphia this week, and that it may enforce a temporary but protracted retirement of the artist from public life. The Philadelphia Press supplies information to this effect in shape of an extract from a letter by Mr. JEFFERSON to a friend. Mr. JEFFERSON says:
“My left eye has been overcast by a mist for some time; the pain became so intese that I was alrmed, and called upon Dr. CHISOLM, (one of the celebrated oculists of Baltimore,) who told me that I was threatened with the loss of sight in one eye, and possibly both. Today I had another examination upon the opthalmoscope by the eminent German occulist, Dr. REULING, and I regret to say he gives me the same cheerless intelligence. Nothing can save my sight, unles I at once give up my profession, and submit to an operation which will not only keep me in bed for two days, but confine to darkness for a longer time. Dr. REULING (who will at once perform the operation) gives me every hope of recovery by attending to my case in this its early stage, but cannot take responsibility if I expose my eye to the continual glare of the light, or delay in at once submitting to an operation. I would have informed you before, but I am only just in possession of the serious fact.”
