Notes: Woman’s Body Found in Car

The wife of a retired Ellicott City physician was found dead early today in her car parked in a lonely wooded area off Johnnycake Road in Woodlawn.

The body of Mrs. Mildred D. Gassaway was found slumped over in her car by two hunters.

Police termed the death an apparent suicide. They said a garden hose had been attached to the exhaust pipe of the car and led into a side window.

The ignition key was turned on in the auto and its gas tank had run dry. Rags were stuffed in the window opening around the garden hose.

Officers estimated the body had been in the car for about three days.

    Found by Hunters
Hunters Seymour Phillips, of Brooklyn, and William Cutlip, of the 3700 block Windsor Mill road, told police they had driven into the heavily wooded area shortly before 9AM and came across the parked car.

It was located in a clearing nearly 300 feet from Johnnycake road near the intersection of Inwood avenue.

Mrs. Gassaway lived on Church road in Ellicott City with her husband,a general practitioner.
