    MURDER AND SUICIDE IN BALTIMORE

BALTIMORE, Aug. 28. — A terrible murder and attempted suicide occurred at the boarding-house No. 58 St. Paul stree, kept by Mrs. Showalter. At 9 o’clock to-night Dr. J. C. Showalter, her husband, who is said to have been very dissipated and quarrelsome of late, and to have frequently threatened the life of his wife, while sitting in their room alone this evening, seized her, and drawing a razoe cut a fearsome gash on the left side of her throat, severing the carotid artery. Mrs. Showalter died in a few minutes. He then cut his own throat from ear to ear, after which he made his way to the street and sat down on the curbstone, anf from thence was taken to the Washington University Hospital. It is said his injuries are not necessarily fatal. The affair created the greatest excitement, and hundreds of people gathered in the vicinity. Both parties were highly respected. Mrs. Showalter was a Miss Carter, of Lancaster County, Va. Dr. Showalter is said to be a son of Dr. Showalter, of New-Orleans.
