Educated at St. John’s Colege; pupil of Dr. Daniel; Assistant Surgeon, U.S.N., July 20, 1799; resigned, January 1, 1801; M.D.; Licentiate in Midwifery; began practice at Baltimore, 1803 or 1804; Physician to the Marine Hospital; Major and Surgeon, Thirty-eighth Infantry, U.S.A., May 20, 1813; appointed from Maryland Hospital Surgeon, March 30, 1814; provisionally retained, June 15, 1815; Assistant Surgeon-General, April 18, 1818; disbanded, June 1, 1821; Deputy Grand Master of Masons, 1809-13; Grand Master, 1813-14 and 1816-18; High Priest, Encampment of the Knights Templar, No. 1, 1812; Fourth Auditor of the United States Treasury, Washington, 1824-29; found guilty in Washington of appropriating the public money and imprisoned therefor 1829 to 1833; Editor of Baltimore Medical and Physical Recorder, 1808-09 (the first medical journal published in Baltimore); one of the Editors of the “Portfolil;” translated several medical works from the French; author of “Tales of the Tripod, or a Delphian Evening,” 12mo, Baltimore, 1821. An elegant scholar and accomplished gentleman. Died at Washington, November 1, 1855.

    “Dr. William J. Williams was a well-known practitioner of the Thompsonian
    school died suddenly yesterday morning, April 20, 1867 at his residence,
    corner of Baltimore and Temple streets, after a few hours illness of
    apoplexy. Dr. Williams was highly regarded not only as a physician but as a
    citizen. He was for 30 years a member of Washington Lodge No. 1 of the
    Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was also a member of the Jerusalem
    Encampment of the same order. He was likewise a member of Ottawa Tribe No. ?
    of the Order of Red Men. And in all those associations held chief
    positions.”
