Notes: “Dr. James M. Porter, one of the best-known citizens of Allegany county, died at his home in Frostburg, last Monday. He had been suffering for a long time from a paralytic stroke received eighteen months ago. It was thought that he would recover, but he could not stand the physical strain. Dr. Porter was born at “Rose Meadow Farm,” three miles from Frostburg, April 14, 1817. His father was the late John Porter. Dr. Porter received his primary education in Frostburg, and studied medicine in the office of the late Drs. Samuel R. Smith and Thomas A. Healey, in Cumberland, and later entered the University of Maryland in Baltimore, during the session of 1839 and 1840. He also attended lectures the University of New York, where he was graduated. He was at one time president of the American Medical Association of the Maryland Medical and Chirurgical Faculty.”
