Funeral services will be held at 5 P.M. today for Mrs. Chase F. Isaacs, a volunteer in the Sinai Hospital canteen for the past fourteen years.

Mrs. Isaacs, who was 88, died at Sinai Hospital Friday after a brief illness.

A native of Lithuania, Mrs. Isaacs came to Baltimore in 1911. She had studied obstetrics in Europe and therefore, before her arrival here, she requested permission from the State Department of Health to practice as a midwife.

Permission was granted and she delivered her first baby in Texas, Md. “Now he’s a doctor in Baltimore,” she recalled several years ago. “Quite a few of my babies became doctors.”

A son, Dr. Benjamin H. Isaacs, recalled yesterday that “she was an extremely busy midwife many years ago.”

Mrs. Isaacs once said, “Five days before my second son was born, I had six confinement cases — al in 24 hours. It was really something.”

In 1947 Mrs. Isaacs retired as a midwife. “I was so tired,” she explained later. “If babies would come in the day I’d still be practicing.”

Six years later she began her work at Sinai Hospital. She first worked in the central supply department but soon became a cashier in the canteen.

In 1965 she estimated that she had spent a total of 9,100 volunteer hours at the hospital.

Besides Dr. Benjamin H. Isaacs, she is survived by two other sons, Lucian B. Isaacs and Dr. Mark L. Isaacs, both of Baltimore, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral service will be at the Levinson funeral establishment, 6010 Reisterstown road.
